SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to Assemblymember Dawn Addis postponing the Assembly Judiciary Committee vote on the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act.

Statement from Mike Young, Executive Director, California Environmental Voters:

“We applaud Assemblymember Addis’ leadership in bringing forth this common-sense proposal—Sacramento must not continue letting polluters off the hook at the expense of Californians already grappling with the rising cost of living. Lawmakers have a clear opportunity to provide relief to struggling families, protect our communities, and finally make fossil fuel corporations pay for the damages they’ve caused.

Let’s be clear: the affordability crisis is hitting the same communities most affected by the climate crisis. From higher insurance premiums and energy bills to the cost of rebuilding after fires and floods, working families are paying the price while Big Oil walks away with both record profits and lack of accountability. Polluters Pay is a common sense solution to shift those costs off the backs of everyday people and onto the corporations that have not only caused, but also profited, this mess.

We will continue to demand that justice and economic relief go hand in hand and that working people are prioritized over corporate profits. We look forward to continuing to work with the large coalition of labor, faith, environmental, business groups, healthcare, and community members and see this policy through to create a more affordable California.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
