OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to results following Election Day.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“It’s staggering and heart-wrenching to realize the rest of the country is in such a different place than California on values. Our fellow Americans leaned into racism, sexism, xenophobia, and homophobia, and now we’re in a direction defined by that yet again. We’ve been here before, but this time the fight will be harder with a stacked supreme court and emboldened leadership.

Now, the last line of defense is the House of Representatives and California, and we’ve known that this responsibility was going to come down to our state. Because ballots can be postmarked by Election Day, it will take weeks, not days, to get final results for some of these races and we need to stay patient.

Trump’s decisive win is painful and scary for people who have repeatedly been targets of his abuse. As the fifth largest economy in the world and home to 12% of Americans, California is going to have an incredible role to play — not just to defend against attacks, but to fight back, push forward aggressively, and light the way for state and global action.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
