OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to Representative McCarthy’s resignation. Departing before the end of his term, Governor Newsom will have 14 days after Rep. McCarthy’s final day to announce a special election to fill his vacancy.

Statement from Aaron McCall, Federal Advocacy Coordinator, California Environmental Voters:

“As Speaker of the House, Representative McCarthy was unable to move forward investments or reforms centering climate action to address the most pressing concerns of Californians. After months of leading a disorganized caucus that was unable to develop and vote on essential budgetary legislation, McCarthy’s final act, that resulted in him being removed as Speaker of the House, was passing a continuing resolution that delayed a government shutdown.

The Republican Congress still hasn’t done the necessary work to pass these critical policies, such as the Farm Bill. This setback has implications for vital aspects of our daily lives, including access to food, the promotion of renewable agriculture, management of public lands, and support for the crucial Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

McCarthy’s resignation creates an opportunity for his constituents to be represented by a dedicated advocate for clean air, access to clean water, and investments in a green economy. We look forward to new representation in this district, ensuring it receives the attention it deserves in addressing our climate challenge.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
