Press Release
October 7, 2011
The entire conservation community applauds the governor’s decision to sign this important bill into law. This legislation will help to stabilize shark populations that have been in significant decline in recent years, preserving sharks’ role at the top of our marine food webs.
Thank you to Assemblymembers Paul Fong and Jared Huffman for authoring the bill, and all of the conservation groups who worked together to pass the ban on a cruel and unnecessary practice.
This victory would not have happened without the amazing outpouring of activism and support from Californians who care deeply about protecting sharks, the health of our oceans and California’s unique environment.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
